Consumer Fraud

Consumer fraud occurs when someone pays for a product or a service that is eventually found to be different or less than what was advertised or promised. State and federal government entities try to catch and punish companies and individuals that commit fraud, but it's a never-ending game of cat-and-mouse as fraudsters think up new scams and new ways to evade the law. Common types of consumer fraud include identity theft, predatory lending, Internet fraud, and pyramid schemes, among many others.
